About the Trio
Trio Gaia offers dynamic, personally relevant experiences inside and outside the concert hall and serves as New England Conservatory’s graduate piano trio in residence. Recently, the trio won 1st prize at the WDAV Young Chamber Musicians Competition and top prizes in the 2021 Chamber Music Yellow Springs and 2019 Plowman National Chamber Music Competitions.
Dedicated to sharing classical music in the community, Trio Gaia has performed in recital halls, schools, and community centers across the US and has presented educational residencies for the Panama Jazz Festival and Virginia Arts Festival. The trio’s current mentors include Vivian Weilerstein, Yeesun Kim, and Kim Kashkashian. When not rehearsing, you can find Grant, Yi-Mei, and Andrew cooking together or writing original arrangements and compositions.
Grant Houston, violin
Grant Houston connects with listeners through performances of unbridled energy and emotional magnetism. Known for drawing in audiences with a uniquely compelling musical voice, he has been described as playing “as ethereally as mist… the audience kept so quiet that it seemed we were holding our breath throughout.” (Yale Alumni Magazine). Particularly devoted to chamber music, recent appearances have included the notable festivals of Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute, Yale University’s Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, the Perlman Music Program, Yellow Barn Young Artists Program, The Moritzburg Festival Academy and the Music Academy of the West.
Yi-Mei Templeman is a classical cellist, singer-songwriter, and composer from Santa Monica, California. She creatively fuses genres, and rethinks typical presentation of classical music in order to welcome people of all backgrounds into her distinctly intimate storytelling. Yi-Mei has brought her music to venues across Asia, Europe, South America, Canada, and the United States. She has spent past summers at the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival, Perlman Music Program, Yale University’s Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, Avaloch Farm, Yellow Barn’s Young Artists Program, Carnegie Hall’s Audience Engagement Institute, and the Tanglewood Institute, where she was principal cellist of the Young Artists Orchestra. She also toured Taiwan with the National Taiwan Youth Symphony and performed in the International Piatigorsky Festival.
Ariel Mo, piano
Ariel, a permanent member of the trio unfortunately has a conflict for this portion of their tour. Guest Artist, Nathan Ben-Yehuda will substitute on piano.
A passionate and versatile artist with an unceasing curiosity for music from the 18th century to today, Ariel Mo brings “an exceptional courage to confront the unknown, and unborn ideas and sounds” (composer Dongryul Lee) to every performance. Besides her commitment to classic piano literature, Ariel also pursues a number of independent creative projects in turn as soloist, collaborator, or curator. In fall 2024, Ariel will present a four-day festival at Cornell University commemorating the 150th anniversary of Charles Ives. Other projects this year include a new solo piano work by Dongryul Lee; a residency at Avaloch Farms with violinist KJ Macdonald; and Echoes of Change, a multimedia concert by Badie Khaleghian in support of Iran’s Women-Life-Freedom Movement.
