What is the PMP Winter Residency?

PMP Suncoast, in partnership with The Perlman Music Program (PMP) in New York, provides world-class educational and performance opportunities for exceptionally gifted classical string musicians, ages 14–20 from around the globe. They are selected by the PMP faculty through an intensive audition process.

During the Residency, students train under the guidance of Toby, and world-renowned violinist, Itzhak Perlman along with a distinguished faculty, many of whom are associated with The Juilliard School. The students receive daily lessons and spend hours of practice on their own, culminating in the Celebration Concert at the Sarasota Opera House where they perform under the baton of Maestro Itzhak Perlman.

The public is invited to attend a variety of free events throughout the Residency in Sarasota, with donors receiving preferred VIP seating. These events include orchestra and chorus rehearsals, student recitals (WIPS), and masterclasses, helping to foster an appreciation of, and access to, classical music.

Additional events will include an evening Chamber Music Concert, the return of Super Strings, the PMP Celebration Concert at the Sarasota Opera House and the Gala Dinner at Michael’s on East.

ORCHESTRA REHEARSALS | JANUARY 2, 5 & 6

A truly extraordinary experience! Watch and listen as Mr. Perlman works with the students to perfect the pieces they will perform at the Celebration Concert. Enjoy his comments, humor and engagement with the students and audiences at these special evenings. Students are seated non-competitively to eliminate the pressure of “ranking.” Seating is rotated for each movement, so each player has a chance to take on leading and supporting roles.

CHORUS REHEARSALS | JANUARY 3 & 4

Students, Fellows and Faculty participate in these lively evening events conducted by Chorus Master, Patrick Romano. You will hear them rehearse the choral masterworks for the Celebration Concert. Singing together and exploring choral masterworks are core components of the PMP curriculum. Toby and Itzhak Perlman believe that the skills needed for singing are essential to an instrumentalist’s artistic development.

SUPER STRINGS | JANUARY 5, 2026

PMP connects with our community in this collaboration with the Sarasota Music Conservatory. Ten exceptionally-talented local string musicians will perform onstage side by side with PMP students at this orchestra rehearsal under the baton of Itzhak Perlman.

WORKS IN PROGRESS (WIPs) | DEC 30; JAN 3, 4, & 7

With their teacher’s approval, students perform in Works in Progress (WIPs) concerts. WIPs provide an opportunity for them to play recital and chamber music repertoire. Get to know the student’s individual personalities as they perform solo pieces they love, or that they find challenging, to gain performance experience in front of large audiences

CHAMBER MUSIC CONCERT | JANUARY 10, 2026

PMP students perform in quartets formed during the residency, presenting chamber works they have rehearsed under the guidance of the Chamber Music Faculty.

TOBY'S DREAM

As a young violin student at Juilliard, Toby Perlman imagined an antidote to the competitive and isolating environment that exceptional young artists often grapple with in the pursuit of their craft.

In the summer of 1994, along with her husband Itzhak, Toby established The Perlman Music Program for aspiring young violinists, violists, cellists, bassists, and pianists. In 2000, a visionary group of supporters secured the program’s 28-acre home on Shelter Island overlooking Crescent Beach. This peaceful, secluded campus is the perfect setting for students to escape the demands of their complicated lives and come together to form a lasting community.

Toby’s dream is based on a deceptively simple idea: meet the needs of each child, respect and trust students, and immerse them in a nurturing environment that emphasizes connection over competition. At PMP, our young musicians learn how to be in the world. They collaborate, support each other, and contribute to camp life. Our faculty look beyond the surface of technical proficiency and focus on their students’ potential to be interesting artists. We safeguard talent and individuality, and encourage kids to explore, take risks, and develop at their own pace.
