Check out this January 2010 concert review written by music critic June Lebell with The East County Observer:

The Perlman Music Program returned to Sarasota for its sixth annual winter residency and, Jan. 2, presented its Celebration Concert for an enthusiastic and packed audience at the Sarasota Opera House. Once again, the Perlmans — Itzhak and his wife, Toby, who is the visionary behind this program — brought with them some 35 of the most talented young string players in the world to study and perform over the holidays in a series of classes and rehearsals, culminating in the Celebration Concert.

The highlight of the performance was a lush, rich and resonant reading of Tchaikovsky’s “Serenade for Strings,” a work George Balanchine used for his New York City Ballet that has become one of the hallmarks of both the ballet stage and the concert hall. Under the exceptional leadership of Itzhak Perlman, who has become as great a conductor as he is a violinist, this was one of the finest performances — live or recorded — one could hear of this work: sonorous, beautifully balanced and just plain gorgeous.

As always, the ensemble of fervent kids rotated seating positions between each of the four movements, allowing them to alternately play first or last, inside or outside stand. But, no matter where they sat, the sound remained luxuriant and lush, like the strings of the Philadelphia Orchestra under Ormandy.

Perlman’s conducting precision was beautifully balanced by his attention to dynamics and blend, making one wonder why he’s not on the podium more often than he is, with more of the major, world-class orchestras with whom he solos. Many a well-known conductor could learn by listening, for example, to the wonderful transition he made from the slow third movement to the fourth.

But The Perlman Music Program’s Chamber Orchestra is not your “ordinary” extraordinary string orchestra. Every player in it is a soloist, yet each has learned, through experience with chamber music and, yes, choral singing, to blend, breathe and phrase like one organism. The ensemble and its leader changed gears easily for the Sarasota premiere of John Williams’ “Air on Simple Gifts,” which was first heard last year, played by Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma and friends at the Obama inauguration, and then re-arranged by Williams specially for the Perlman Music Program. Its syncopated, jazzy Americana was given energy and animation by the ensemble.

But the real energy came with the finale: a clever arrangement by violinist Stephanie Chase of Sarasate’s “Zigeunerweisen.” This, like Chase’s arrangement of the “Carmen Fantasy,” used by the PMP Chamber Orchestra in past years, is a blockbuster of a piece and, once again, Perlman broke it up into individual solo turns for everyone in the ensemble, from violinists to bass players, eliciting cheers, laughter and total delight from the audience.

We should mention that this concert was preceded by a week or so of rehearsals and classes that were open to the public, transforming Sarasota into a holiday festival of music-making. One suggestion: Although the choral work is important for the instrumentalists because it teaches them phrasing and breathing, it might be more prudent to move it into a free concert for the public prior to the main celebratory concert.

The Perlman Music Program has always been an inspiration, but this year, between the talented players and Perlman’s great expertise on the podium, it was the best yet.

The premiere week of the new education / outreach program took off full-force on Monday, October 26 and never let down until these young professionals, alumni of The Perlman Music Program, headed back to NYC on Saturday, October 31.

During this first visit, The LK String Quartet was in residence at four middle schools and three elementary schools.  A total of 10 schools will participate over the course of this three-week program thanks to collaborative efforts of the Sarasota and Manatee School Boards with great support of PMP/Suncoast Education Consultant, Cindy Balistreri and PMP/Suncoast board member, Barbara Staton.

Curriculum-based preparatory packets with music CD were skillfully prepared by LK String Quartet violist, Laura Seay, a Juilliard Alum currently studying in a doctoral program in music education at The Teachers College of Columbia University.  Daily performances and in-classroom lessons could not have taken place without the great combination of musical and educational talents of the "balance" of the LK String Quartet including violinists Sean Lee, Areta Zhulla, and cellist Jordan Han, all currently graduate students at The Juilliard School.

Special thanks if extended to Dr. Donald Shetler, Professor Emeritus of The Eastman School of Music in sharing his knowledge in this premiere year of the PMP/Suncoast education/outreach program by providing professional evaluation of the impact of performances and in-classroom activities.

This new program is presented with full support of Toby and Itzhak Perlman and PMP faculty, The Juilliard School, Columbia University, the Sarasota and Manatee School Boards, and The Perlman Music Program/Suncoast Board of Directors.  It is sponsored in part by the Knight Fund of the Manatee County Foundation, the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, the Florida Council on Arts and Culture, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The impact so far?  The LK String Quartet's passion for music immediately inspired students at each and every school to treat them like "rock stars."

Each year approximately 35 exceptionally talented young musicians arrive in Sarasota to commence serious study with the PMP world-class faculty during their winter holidays from school.  Much of their effort takes place in private practice rooms on the USF Sarasota/Manatee campus, but at least once a day on most days during the last two weeks of December the public is invited to listen in on their rehearsals, enjoy recitals of solo and chamber works in progress, and enjoy the real magic of this musical mentoring process up-close and first hand.

These free public events take place in a climate-controlled outdoor performance tent placed on the grounds of the USF Sarasota/Manatee campus (8350 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, FL 34243).

While the majority of free tickets on a first come first served basis will still be available to the general public who choose to pick up their tickets in person in the rotunda on the USF Sarasota/Manatee campus November 14 - December 14, 2009, there are new ways to fast-track ticket requests and provide access to the programs.

The new PMP/Suncoast Membership program starts with individual support of $50 up to lifetime memberships of individual support of $500/$1000 for couples. Annual memberships not only provide much needed support for the operations of the program but also a number of benefits including:

  • Advanced access to the free ticket schedule and Celebration Concert tickets starting Oct 1.
  • Membership vouchers to be picked up at the first performance attended
  • 8 tickets per person per season available to your choice of free event dates
  • Access to preferred cushioned seating in Membership section at free events up to 15-minutes prior to all programs
  • Notification of schedule changes and The Perlman Music Program News
  • Invitation to attend special pre and post event activities
  • Complimentary invitation to our "members-only" event
  • Advanced information and offers by E-mail regularly throughout the season

The benefit Celebration Concert & Gala Dinner at 5 pm, Saturday, January 2, 2010 at the Sarasota Opera House is the culmination of two weeks of rehearsals and master classes for the young musicians.  This event is the single gala fundraising effort of the organization and an important means for the community to support the ongoing existence of The Perlman Music Program Winter Residency in Sarasota. Tickets for the concert only are on sale starting October 15 at the Sarasota Opera House box office.  Call (941) 366-8450 ext 1.

The Perlman Music Program/Suncoast Launches Education Outreach Program for Sarasota and Manatee County Schools

The Perlman Music Program/Suncoast (formerly of Sarasota), with the support and cooperation of The Juilliard School, Columbia University's Teacher College, Toby & Itzhak Perlman and the faculty of The Perlman Music Program, has announced plans to launch education outreach programs for the Sarasota and Manatee county schools.  This Board-initiated effort was led by long time music educator and Board member Barbara Staton.  Cindy Balistreri, recently retired Sarasota County Fine arts Program Specialist for the School Board of Sarasota County, is serving as PMP/Suncoast's consultant for developing the curriculum-based programming which will serve a total of four middle schools in both Sarasota and Manatee counties as well as the feeder elementary schools in the initial year.

The pilot project commencing in October 2009 is scheduled to include the LK Quartet in residence.  Laura Seay, violist of the quartet, graduate of The Juilliard School and currently a graduate student at Teacher's College, Columbia University, will work in close collaboration with Cindy Balistreri and thus combine both the latest methods and research in music education with over a decade of hands-on, management-level curriculum development experience.

Now commencing its sixth year, the PMP Winter Residency in Sarasota has been providing free admission to diverse audiences of about 13,000 each year for rehearsals, performances and master classes both out in the community and on the USF-Sarasota/Manatee campus.

"We've drawn our audience north from St. Pete down to Punta Gorda and Fort Myers," says PMP/Suncoast Board Member Barbara Staton. "Now that our name reflects our area of activity, we can reach out to provide more and encourage participation and support from the entire Suncoast."

"In this second phase of growth, PMP/Suncoast plans to add this curriculum-based outreach program to bring the personal experience of PMP music-making directly to the schoolchildren in Florida's west coast," adds PMP/Suncoast Executive Director Elizabeth Power.

The Perlman Music Program/Suncoast encourages artistic development and camaraderie among young international string musicians via a nurturing non-competitive world renowned music education program.  PMP/Suncoast ensures its continued growth and viability through cultivating regional and national participation and support by offering premier cultural and educational outreach programs, world-class performances, and events in Sarasota and its surrounding communities. Funding is being solicited for support of all of PMP/Suncoast's educational efforts.
