The Perlman Music Program/Suncoast Education Outreach Program brings PMP alumni as teaching and performing artists into the Southwest Florida schools of Sarasota and Manatee counties.
The premiere of this program was launched in October 2009 with the support and cooperation of The Juilliard School, Columbia University’s Teacher College, Toby & Itzhak Perlman and the faculty of The Perlman Music Program. Now in its second year, it provides in-school interactive performances for fifth and sixth grade students and hands-on experiences for middle school and high school orchestra classes at no charge to the schools. Curriculum-based materials are provided to educators to assist with preparing their students for visits.
This Board-initiated effort is led by long time music educator and Board member Barbara Staton with support of recently retired Sarasota County Fine Arts Program Specialist for the School Board of Sarasota County, Cindy Balistreri, who serves as PMP/Suncoast’s consultant for developing the curriculum-based programming which serves 12 schools equally divided between Sarasota and Manatee counties. More than 10,000 students have been served since the program's inception.
Free public performances are also offered as part of the three-week in-school residency, presented in October, January, and May (one week each).
New for the 2011-2012 season, PMP/Suncoast is partnering with the School District of Sarasota County in order to offer live broadcast performances to Sarasota and Manatee County Schools via the Internet and Safari Live technology. CLICK HERE to learn more about by visiting EdExploreSRQ lisitngs:
